Hippest Hippos Thank You Card

Hello there! Thank you for visiting my blog! And thank you so much for voting for my card--it placed fifth in Kylie Bertucci's August International Blog Highlights competition!! I am honoured to be part of a group of amazingly talented designers from all around the world, and to have been invited to participate in the Top Ten Winners Hop again. (I have posted my winning card at the bottom of this blog entry, in case you haven't seen it.)

Hippest Hippos Thank You Card

Our Hippest Hippo stamps and Hippo Dies are just the cutest!! And right now during Sale-a-Bration, one of Stampin' Up!'s best promotions of the year, you can earn a FREE Sale-a-Bration reward with every $60 (before taxes and shipping)!! The Hippest Hippos stamp set can still be earned for FREE with a $60 purchase in Canada!* Unfortunately, the Hippo Dies was extremely popular and has now sold out. 😢 The photo of the Sale-a-Bration brochure in the right sidebar has a link that will show you all of the products that you can choose for free! If you live in Canada 🇨🇦 and don't presently have a Stampin' Up! demonstrator, I'd love to help you out! Shopping links are below. *PLEASE NOTE: Sale-a-Bration has ended so the free Hippest Hippos stamp set and the Hippo Dies are no longer available.

My shaker card was so much fun to make! I was inspired by a card that I saw made by Ann Alexander of Australia. I started by scribbling on a piece of Vellum cardstock with four Stampin' Blends (Tahitian Tide, Bermuda Bay, Orchid Oasis, and Night of Navy), and then spritzed it with 99% isopropyl alcohol to make the colours blend. This became the background behind my window sheet cutout, where I added the Effervescent Elements (which I absolutely love!).

I love how the Effervescent Elements pick up the
colours of the background! Aren't they amazing?

The hippo is coloured with Smoky Slate Stampin' Blends, and given a snorkel and mask (which has window sheet "glass"). The seaweed is vellum cut with the Splendid Stems dies, and then coloured with Parakeet Party Stampin' Blends. The Pacific Point card front is dry embossed with our Stripes & Splatters 3D embossing folder (the Splatters folder, as you likely guessed 😉). Full directions for my card are below.

Here is the card I submitted for this month's contest. Thanks again for voting it into fifth place! To see more photos and directions for the card below, click here.

Full Directions for My Hippest Hippos Thank You Card:
  1. Cut the following layers:
    • Tahitian Tide cardstock: 11" x 4-1/4", scored at 5-1/2"; 3-1/2" x 1" (die cut wave, snorkel, mask, and water drops), 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" (for background behind vellum)
    • Basic White cardstock: 5-1/4" x 4"; 2-1/2" x 1-1/4" (stamp sentiment in Pacific Point, cut with Stylish Shapes banner, then cut again to trim), 2" x 2-1/2" (stamp hippo in Memento Black, then colour with Smoky Slate Stampin' Blends, and cut with Hippo Die)
    • Pacific Point cardstock: 5" x 3-3/4" (die cut with largest Stylish Shapes circle, then dry emboss with Splatters 3D Embossing Folder)
    • Foam Sheets: 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" (die cut with largest Stylish Shapes circle)
    • Vellum Cardstock: 3-1/2" x 3-1/2"; 4" x 3" (die cut seaweed using Stylish Stems dies, then colour with Parakeet Party Stampin' Blends)
  2. Adhere Basic White onto Tahitian Tide card base.
  3. Scribble Stampin' Blends onto square vellum piece, filling in entirely with Tahitian Tide, Bermuda Bay, Orchid Oasis, and Night of Navy. Spritz with a small amount of 99% isopropyl alcohol to blend the colours. Start with a small amount--if you add too much, it takes most of the colour away. Spritz more alcohol, if necessary. If you need to, you can always repeat this step. Allow to dry completely.
  4. Adhere the vellum sheet (right side up) with Stampin' Seal to the square Tahitian Tide piece, but only at the outer edges (outside of the exposed circle).
  5. Use Seal to glue the window sheet over the cut out circle onto the back of the embossed Pacific Point layer (being careful that the glue doesn't show).
  6. Remove the inner circle from the foam sheet. Remove the backing from one side of the remaining foam sheet. Adhere to the window sheet, carefully lining up the edges of both circles.
  7. Add about 1-1/2 teaspoons of Effervescent Elements inside the foam "fence". Remove the remaining backing from the foam sheet, and then add the vellum/Tahitian Tide piece, with the right side of the vellum facing the elements. Press well to seal.
  8. Add leftover strips of the foam sheet to the bottom and edges of the back of the Pacific Point sheet, and adhere to the Basic White layer.
  9. Add wave, hippo, seaweed, and water drops to card front.
  10. Adhere sentiment label with Dimensionals
  11. Add three Polished Dots to card front.

I'd love for you to comment below, if you have a moment. 😊 Then be sure to check out the other Top Ten Winners' cards!!
